A BRAND WHITEPAPER
Devices used by artists. Created by artists.
Abstract
bymonalisa exists for a simple reason: the people who use creative tools should be the ones who design them. Founded by two brothers, Yusuf and Said, who came up through the artist scene, bymonalisa builds bespoke devices for makers who were tired of bending their craft to fit tools that were never built with them in mind. This paper lays out the problem we set out to solve, the story behind the brand, the principles that guide our work, and the future we are building toward.
The Problem
Most devices artists rely on are not made by artists. They are conceived in boardrooms, scoped by spreadsheets, and shaped by what is cheap to manufacture and easy to market. The result is a quiet compromise that creators learn to live with: tools that almost fit, that almost respond the way the hand expects, that almost disappear into the work.
Almost is not enough. When a device fights the person using it, the work suffers. Energy that should go into creating is spent adapting — working around limitations, forcing a process into a shape it was never meant to take. Artists have been trained to accept this as normal. We do not.
A tool should be an extension of the maker, not an obstacle between the maker and the idea. That gap — between what artists need and what the market offers — is the space bymonalisa was built to close.
Origin: Two Brothers, One Need
bymonalisa did not begin as a company. It began as a need.
Yusuf and Said are brothers, and both came up through the artist scene. They know the late nights, the false starts, and the specific frustration of reaching for a device only to find it doesn't do the one thing the moment demands. They lived that frustration long enough to stop accepting it.
So they did what artists do. They made the thing they couldn't find. The first bespoke devices were built for themselves — instruments shaped around their own process, tested against real work rather than a feature list. The tools worked because the people designing them understood, from the inside, exactly what was being asked of them.
What started as solving their own problem became something bigger. Other artists recognized the difference immediately. A device made by someone who shares your practice feels unmistakably different in the hand. bymonalisa grew out of that recognition — and the conviction that this difference deserved to be shared.
Philosophy
Everything we make is guided by a few non-negotiable beliefs:
1. Maker-led design. The artist comes first, always. Every decision begins with the person who will hold the device and the work they are trying to make — not with cost, convenience, or trend.
2. Bespoke over mass-market. We would rather make the right device for a real practice than the average device for an imagined crowd. Bespoke is not a luxury label. It is the only honest way to serve a craft.
3. Function shaped by craft. Form follows the work. The way a device behaves, responds, and feels is dictated by how artists actually create — not by what is easiest to build.
4. Tools that disappear. The highest compliment a device can earn is to be forgotten in use — to become a natural extension of the hand, leaving nothing between the artist and the idea.
The Approach
We design from the inside out. Because we come from the scene we serve, our process is grounded in lived practice rather than assumption.
Every device is conceived in response to a real creative need, prototyped, and then put to work — used in the studio, on stage, in the field, wherever the craft actually happens. We refine based on what the work reveals, not what a focus group predicts. Feedback comes from artists, and it changes the product.
This is slower than mass production. It is also the only way to make something that earns a place in another artist's hands. We measure success not by units shipped, but by the work our devices make possible.
Who It's For
bymonalisa is for the makers — the ones who care about the tools as much as the output, who feel the difference between a device that fights them and one that moves with them. Whatever the medium, if you have ever wished a tool simply understood what you were trying to do, this brand was built for you.
We are artists building for artists. That is not a slogan. It is the whole point.
Vision
What began with two brothers solving their own problem is becoming a movement: a community of artists who refuse to compromise on the instruments of their craft.
Our future is more bespoke devices, more collaboration with the people who use them, and a standard the wider industry has long ignored — that those who make the work deserve a say in the tools that shape it.
bymonalisa is an invitation. Bring your practice, your frustration, and your ideas. The best devices are still the ones we have yet to build — together.
bymonalisa — by artists, for artists.
